Welcome to my website and thank you for taking the time to explore it. My work focuses on ordinary human beings faced with extraordinary circumstances. The Second World War has proved a rich seam and I have written about many aspects of it including evacuees, women on the Home Front, fashion in wartime and, most recently, the stories of country houses requisitioned and used for multifarious purposes.

I love mountaineering, adventure and travel. To feel warm sunlight on your face and breathe cold, fresh mountain air is what keeps me alive, but it has almost cost me my life. I learned to walk without toes, work with battered hands and come to terms with my facial scarring. Physically, that was hard enough, but the mental scars were much deeper cut, and I knew of only one way to heal them. I had to climb again. To some people, standing bef.
